The Message
Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five’s 1982 recording of “The Message” is the earliest release on file. Clifton “Jiggs” Chase, Duke Bootee, Grandmaster Melle Mel and Sylvia Robinson are credited as its writers. Also recorded by Mike Peters (released 1994), Stiff Little Fingers (released 1997) and Down Low (released 2006), among 110 recordings of this work on MusicBrainz. Ice Cube’s “Check Yo’ Self (remix)” (1994) samples it, per MusicBrainz. It is on the album The Message (1982).
Melle Mel shares the credit on this one with Duke Bootee, Sylvia Robinson and Jiggs Chase, and Stiff Little Fingers still picked it up and recorded it in 1997. Play the two side by side and hear how far the song travels without losing its grip.
Cube's remix rides on a 1982 record, and hearing the source is like finding the foundation under a house you've walked through a hundred times. Start with Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, then go back to Cube and listen for the seams.
